Sodium hypobromite, NaOBr

When bromine reacts with sodium hydroxide in aqueous solution, sodium hypobromite is formed:

2NaOH+Br2 =NaOBr+NaBr+H2O.

It is also a product of the electrolysis of sodium bromide without a diaphragm.

The salt has only been obtained in solution. In this form it is an important oxidizer in analytical operations. For the heat of formation of the dissolved compound from its elements, Berthelot gives 82.1 Cal.
